MUSMA, Matera, Italy

Museo Della Scultura Contemporanea Matera
Palazzo Pomarici Recinto Cavone, 5 - 75100 Matera
Fondazione Zétema

MUSMA opened on October 14, 2006. Located in the Sassi district of Matera, Italy, the museum juxtaposes the caves and stone architecture from centuries past with the modern sculpture and art from the 20th and 21st centuries.

The Sassi district has housed civilization since 2 B.C. The soft stone allowed the residents to dig caves, and use the stones cut from the caves to build edifices on their dwellings. However, lack of utilities (including sanitation) caused many problems, and in the 1950s, the Italian government relocated the residents to modern housing. The district was slated to be razed, but intervention by the Fondazione Zétema and others saved this richly historic area. The district is undergoing renovations, including utilities, but the stairways, alleyways, and the Matera stone buildings will remain to give the city a timeless quality.
